Phinney, a native Californian, was born in Gilroy, the son of a botanist and a college professor. Orin is Phinney’s father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. Rather, it was by the now iconic, and iconoclastic, winemaker David Phinney. Orin Swift Cellars is a relative newcomer on the California wine scene, having been established in 1998, but not by “Orin Swift,” as I had long assumed. He is adamant that “all wines from California are inferior to any wine from Europe, especially Spain!” so I looked forward to his evaluation of this one, as well as my own. We used quality individual wine lots to create a seamless blend with both finesse and power, ultimately, creating a wine that embodies the spirit and energy of Orin Swift.I have been aware of Orin Swift wines for some time, especially The Prisoner, but had never had the chance to try any of them, so I was intrigued when a friend brought over this selection.

We also weren’t going to restrict ourselves by appellation constraints and focused on making the best possible Petite Sirah-based blend from California. We forged ahead and created a blend that showcases Petite Sirah as multi-dimensional-both brawny and delicate at the same time. In many ways, Machete has done similarly-albeit symbolically. On a journey, a machete exists to serve a specific purpose: to cut, slash and forge a path through the thicket. Rich, enveloping and vivacious, the wine finishes with perpetuating energy and length- not to mention the satisfying tannins that rouse a desire for more.Īged for 12 months in French Oak, 38% new. Massive on the entry, the mid - palate is diverse with flavors of dark plums, black pepper, Amarena cherries, slow -roasted Moroccan lamb and a marbled leather texture. Pure inky garnet in the glass, the aromatics of plum compote, wild blackberries, crushed gravel, peanut brittle and Tahitian vanilla emanate. Blind tasted to determine quality, the lots that make the Machete cut- pun intended- are qualified to be one with the family of labels. Sourced from all over the state, Machete is a culmination of bird - dogging some of the best Petite Sirah, Grenache and Syrah vineyards that produce rich and flavorful fruit. The wine itself, a Petite Sirah - based blend, isn’t a typical wine it exudes a powerful punch with a lingering delicacy- a dichotomy of sorts. They aren’t quite sure what they have in front of them they turn away confused, turn back and inspect it again- what is this? And we’re not even talking about the label s yet. It’s a strange thing hearing you’ve caught people off guard. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with muscular, crunchy black fruits and plush tannins, finishing long with lovely freshness.' 'Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Proprietary Red Machete needs some swirling to reveal a core of beautiful crushed black plums, boysenberries and black cherry compote plus hints of cracked black pepper, garrigue and camphor.
